India a country with magnificent scientists, may it be rocket science or robotics, biotechnology or agriculture, while economists are reaching for the international standards,Bapu’s (Gandhi's) economic strategies are looked forward to implement the ages old reforms that the Mahatma had envisioned. Despite all these technological advancement, the strong economists like Manmohan Singh, our scientists choose to flood in the United States boosting their economy, because of lack of facilities, while India continues to be a “Developing Nation”. We are rich in resources, we comprise the most intelligent group of people, we possess a rich culture, the Mahabharata also incorporates the management Gimmicks, we actually lack nothing to stay in this position of “Developing Nation” since ages while we remain stagnant, but I believe it’s a deep root that needs to be traced.
Starting from the leaders of our nations- our outstanding politicians who are majorly a gang of criminals( more than 50% of them have criminal records), then we can imagine how our country is being run. While MNCs are busy filling in pockets of the young generation, especially in the IT sector, the youth chooses to lead a lavish and secure life than enter into politics as a responsibility or try make a difference because the corruption level has reached beyond imagination, so we really don’t know how and where to start, so better ignore. Thus we are with a few old fashioned leaders, who don’t understand the change in time and the need to change the ideologies. While we proclaim to be secular, we have riots in every corner. We have some Senas who focus on banning Valentine’s day saying Christians have no place in our culture, now who is looking for their moral policing, while they are all busy abusing people, even the women and are confident since they are backed by the Politicians. If our politicians are busy addressing such issues, then who will take care of domestic abuse of women that still is kept under covers, especially in states like Rajasthan, Bihar, Orissa where women are born to suffer and any lower caste woman is miserably beaten up, stripped off in front of public, while the Police discourages them from entering a FIR. This is what our police is good for. We have naxalites bombing, group of anti- muslims, anti- Tamils, anti this and anti that, springing up from all sides, while the people in North east are demanding for their individual identity crying out, “we are Nagas by birth, Indians by accident”, can we ever imagine of working together. Only when we are united can we expect some changes. While the farmers are sleeping with a hungry stomach and committing suicide, while other than a handful kids in the villages, none of them actually know what Education is, while many can’t afford to finish their 10th standards and are forced to child labor, we expect them all to contribute to our Nation’s Development??
Let us look at the northeastern region has a rural population of around 82 per cent and they depend largely on agriculture and allied sectors for work and income security. The region is culturally diverse, 225 of India’s 450 tribes live here. But do we really consider them as our brothers, rather they are more of Chinese or Nepali to us. In spite of the richness of culture and bio resources, there is much poverty and unemployment. In spite of an average annual rainfall of over 2000 mm, water shortage during December-May is serious, even in The Cherrapunjee region (now known as Sohra) in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya faces scarcity during December-April though the annual rainfall exceeds 12,000 mm. Sohra lies atop a limestone plateau and limestone sucks in the water. The only solution is to hold rainwater, but there is no attention given to these so called;”forest people” and Government expects them to find a way out. The north east lies neglected so far as funds and initiatives for Research and Development is concerned. While the central Government, and the national leaders were busy addressing the broader economic concerns, giving shape to the country’s foreign policy and grappling with the nitty-gritty’s of administering the nation ever since Independence to “Build” the nation, these group of people are completely isolated on the end who have no one to listen to their voices, just because they are a rich set of tribes?
Such regions can be worked on by the focus on building of Biovillages: The biovillage paradigm involves concurrent attention to the conservation and enhancement of the ecological foundations for sustainable agriculture; enhancing the productivity and profitability of small holdings, and generation of multiple livelihood opportunities through crop-livestock-fish integration, biomass utilisation, and agro-processing.
Bioparks: These are designed to add value to plant and animal biomass through agro-processing and preparation of a wide range of market-linked products.
Biovalleys: The aim is to promote along a watershed small-scale enterprises supported by microcredit and to link biodiversity, biotechnology and business in a mutually reinforcing manner. The biotechnology enterprises relate to the production and marketing of biological software essential for sustainable agriculture, such as biofertilizers, biopesticides, and vermiculture.
India has everything to make it a superpower but it lacks committed people. We may be confessed by saying the development in IT field and space activities. These developments will increase the pride of our nation among international communities but won't fill the stomach of the masses who are still below the poverty line. We should attain the growth universally not by indicating one or two areas. Our Government, politicians and people should work hard to narrow down the gap between rich and poor. There won't be any progress without giving attention to socio-economic imbalances. Economic imbalance is one of the causes for extremism. Extremists are not born but produced. We are not paying any attention to eradicate this but we are busy in air-conditioning the resting places of place of worship and repairing the temple cars for the car festival and deepening the temple tank for floating festival when the country is floating on economic strains. There are no sanitation facilities for the villagers, no health facilities, no proper schools, but we are all busy in our own selfish issues and just pitying the sites of those in ruthless conditions.
It’s very easy to push the blame on others, especially the politicians, but how many of the the professional students are having a major responsibility to make India a developed country (like Engineers are called the builders of the nation)? Are we too not responsible in contributing to the development? The day all of us stand united, then can we start to hope to move on from this long stagnant phase of “Developing” to approach towards “development.”
